All about SPACE
SPACE (Supporting Parents Alongside Children’s Education) is a programme developed by four mothers from Wellington, New Zealand who saw a need in their community in the early 2000s. The programme is aimed at first time parents/caregivers and their babies. (Second or third-time time parents/caregivers who wish to gain the latest information on parenting are also welcome, but we are unable to accommodate older children at the sessions.)
While SPACE was originally rolled out as part of the Playcentre movement, it has since been embraced by a number of organisations. Space@Cedar Saplings was part of a pilot programme in 2011, sponsored by Plunket, Barnardos, SKIP, PAFT, Ministry of Social Development, SPACENZ and AnglicanCare. Since then our programme has expanded to offer three groups running concurrently.
The SPACE@Cedar Saplings programme runs for three terms (approximately 30 weeks). The length of the SPACE session times may vary but are typically around 2 ½ hours each week.
Sessions are run by SPACE trained facilitators who have professional qualifications and/or experience in midwifery, nursing, education, music or other professions working with young families.
The SPACE Programme focuses on the following:
- The heart of parenting
- Your growing baby
- Exploring play (play experiences for the baby alongside you as a first time parent).
A baby and parent-friendly atmosphere
SPACE@Cedar Saplings focuses on the mother and child and the rights of children.
- If your baby sleeps late or needs to be changed just as you are leaving home, just come along. We all understand babies don’t work to a routine at this age,
- You are welcome to feed your baby in the group or in the room next door,
- If you wish, bring your stroller, sling or front pack if you find these useful to settle your baby during the session.
Held in the Chelsea Rooms, Cedar Centre, 56A Tramway Rd, BEACH HAVEN.
